My life would be a bit easier if I just automated my bills – one less thing to have to worry about. Except if I stop worrying about it, I stop worrying about it, you know? And the next thing you know, I’ve got 750 subscription services that I never use, we have a toilet leaking that I haven’t noticed, and we’re headed to the poorhouse.
We automate our savings, because duh, I don’t want to think about that. I try not to automate too many bills, especially the ones that are variable each month (cell phone, water, electricity). I have Netflix on automatic bill pay, because I think I have to, but it is the only thing that goes on a certain credit card, so I have to think about it every month as I pay it. Amazon Prime is on a card with other purchases going on it and I never even consider it. I should move Amazon Prime to its own credit card.
At any rate, I like to feel a bit of a burn with every bill I pay, to make sure I keep as many of them as low as I can. I still pay almost everything online, but if I’m looking at each bill before it goes out, it helps me to stay on top of things.
